Cartier Tank – A Fan Favorite for Over 100 Years
In 1904, the Brazilian pioneer aviator, Alberto Santos-Dumont complained to his friend Louis Cartier about the unreliability and impracticality of using pocket watches while flying. Cartier designed a flat wristwatch with a distinctive square bezel. This watch was favored not only by Santos-Dumont himself but also by many other customers. This was the first and only time the brand would name a watch after its original wearer. The “Santos” watch was Cartier’s first men’s wristwatch. In 1907, Cartier signed a contract with Edmond Jaeger, who agreed to exclusively supply the movements for Cartier watches.
Designed by Louis Cartier, the Tank watch model was introduced in 1919 with a design inspired by the newly introduced tanks on the Western Front in World War I. In the early 1920s, Cartier formed a joint-stock company with Edward Jaeger (of Jaeger-LeCoultre) to produce movements solely for Cartier. Cartier continued to use movements from other makers: Vacheron Constantin, Audemars Piguet, Movado, and LeCoultre. It was also during this period that Cartier began adding its own reference numbers to the watches it sold, usually by stamping a four-digit code on the underside of a lug.
The first Tank had chamfered Roman numerals, which are still present on most models today. Other original details found on modern editions include the railroad minute track and a pair of blue hands—the original lacked a second hand. Thanks to these classic features, the then-unorthodox rectangular case, and linear design, the Tank quickly became a smash hit.
The Tank has undergone many changes over the years. Since its debut, the number of different versions has risen to the hundreds. The various sub-collections bear the names Solo, Américaine, Française, and Anglaise. While these series contain both men’s and women’s models, Cartier dedicates the Tank MC line solely to men’s watches.

Cartier watch Collection – Cartier Santos – The Watch for Pilots
In 1904, Santos-Dumont went to his friend, Louis Cartier, and asked him to create a watch he could use in flight without taking his hands off the controls. Cartier immediately went to work and soon presented the aviation pioneer with the Santos – the world’s first genuine men’s wristwatch.
In 1906, Santos-Dumont completed the first public flight with a motorized plane. During the flight, which set many world records, Santos-Dumont wore a unique square wristwatch. Demand for the watch quickly increased, leading Cartier to begin series production of the Santos in 1911.
The Santos collection is by far the oldest line of watches still produced by French luxury jewelry and watch manufacturer Cartier. Louis Cartier designed the first Santos in 1904 at the request of Brazilian aviation pioneer Alberto Santos-Dumont. The result was like nothing else offered at the time. Its square case helped set it apart from the era’s conventional round pocket watches. It also featured integrated lugs, which enabled it to sit comfortably on the wrist using a strap or bracelet. Thus, the Tank would go down in history as the first genuine men’s wristwatch.
While Santos’ design has changed very little over time, the opposite is true of its materials and movements. A Classic Barrel-Shaped Dress Watch. Cartier introduced the Roadster in 2001. To many fans’ dismay, the Parisian manufacturer retired this model just over ten years later. One of the First Water-Resistant Watches. Cartier introduced the first water-resistant wristwatches in the 1930s. However, due to complex sealing mechanisms, most of the era’s square and rectangular models were only water-resistant for a short time. It’s always been easier to make round cases water-resistant. Thus, in 1943, the Parisian company presented a gold watch with a round case, screw-down case back, and centrally-positioned lugs. Other defining features included a grid over the watch crystal and a screw-down cap for the crown. After winding and setting the watch, the wearer could screw the cap back on the crown. Losing the cap was almost impossible, as it was attached to the case by a small chain. Today, Cartier leaves room for a personalized engraving on the side of the case just below the crown.
The Pasha’s extraordinary crown guard has never undergone any changes and remains a vital part of every timepiece. However, the popular dial grid only appears on certain models, making them particularly coveted among collectors. The Pasha collection also includes women’s models, such as Miss Pasha and Pasha C, and chronographs like the Pasha Seatimer Chronograph with an automatic caliber and water resistance to 100 m (10 bar, 328 ft).

The Calibre de Cartier collection contains three-hand watches with a date display, chronographs, and diving watches that are water resistant to 300 m (30 bar, 984 ft). There are also timepieces with other complications like a perpetual calendar or tourbillon. Cases measuring 42 mm in diameter reflect the sporty background of this collection, while the smaller 38-mm models make perfect unisex watches. The large domed lugs combined with polished and satin-brushed finishes contribute to the collection’s masculine feel. A closer look at the dial reveals a subtle Cartier inscription integrated into the Roman numeral “X.” In addition, these watches feature a blue-faceted spinel on their crowns, though some replace the spinel with a diamond.
While the stainless steel versions have the sportiest feel, these timepieces are also available in white, pink, or yellow gold. There are also bicolor models in gold and stainless steel.
